A Smile

Wrinkles merely mark where smiles have been.

– Mark Twain

As I read this quote, I think of all those joyous people whose spontaneous smile lights up a room.  These happy souls touch the lives of many others through their simple act of generosity and kindness, because a smile evokes warmth and inclusion, understanding and welcome.

Can you imagine a world where we each make a welcoming smile our default facial expression?

Pinned above my desk, I have a little card that I’ve kept for many years featuring the beautiful poem A Smile.  It’s an important reminder for me that smiles are gifts that cost nothing to give, but enrich the lives of receivers in ways we might not ever know.

Every smile we give has a ripple effect that moves out into our world.  I’m ready to make enormous ripple waves!

So, as I write this on New Years Eve 2018 and we head into another year of possibilities and choices, I’m absolutely determined to smile generously and often.

My aim is to create deep, deep wrinkles that will never be erased!

Find that phosphorescence, that light within …

– Emily Dickinson

A Smile

A smile costs nothing, but gives so much.

It enriches those who receive,

without making poorer those who give.

It takes but a moment,

but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.

None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it,

and none is so poor that he can not be made rich by it.

A smile creates happiness in the home,

fosters good will in business,

and is the countersign of friendship.

It brings rest to the weary,

cheer to the discouraged,

sunshine to the sad,

and it is nature’s best antidote for trouble.

Yet, it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen,

for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away.

Some people are too tired to give you a smile.

Give them one of yours,

as one needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.
